Balance and Moderation are the Keys to Life By Rushdy El-Ghussein, former president of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City Muslims believe their religion is a way of life. Accordingly religion can be a source to handle all life problems. Religion gives us the goal, which is to please the Almighty (Allah) God. The means that we use to reach that goal also has to be acceptable to God. In other words, our actions have to have a divine goal and have to be achieved in an honorable and sincere manner without transgression against God, others and the environment. Problems in this life come and increase when we are selfishly motivated and not caring for others or the environment. A true Muslim believer remembers and recites the verse from the Qur'an: "Say: Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, My life and my death are (all) for Allah, The cherisher of the worlds" (6:162). A person, male or female, who lives his life connected to the supreme creator has his conscience as a compass that guides him from extremism, and has his love for the almighty God to motivate to do good at all times. Obeying God and contributing to the well-being of our community should make life problems and difficulties tolerable and manageable. Many of the problems and difficulties we face come from selfishness, greed and egotism. Nothing can extinguish selfishness, greed, egotism like believing and submitting to God. Belief is not the utterance and profession of some dogmas and certain ideas, but it is to live and commit oneself to serve God, community and the environment. God has created human beings superior to other beings because humans have the capacity to find balance and moderation between the spiritual and the physical.
