An Open Letter from God

By The Reverend Duke Tufty, Senior Pastor, Unity Temple on the Plaza Q: I am sure religion is very helpful to some people, but I am a scientifically trained person, and frankly I can’t accept the idea of believing in something like God that you can’t prove or can’t see. What would you say to someone like me? A: I can understand your reluctance as a scientifically trained person to believe in the wide variety of religious beliefs, many of which stand in direct contradiction to scientific fact. Many religious beliefs were formed thousands of years ago, and they reflect what the people at that time believed to be the truth. Now, however, as our knowledge advances closer to the truth, we discover many ancient religious beliefs to be superstitious or myth. The same is true for science. Many beliefs that were established hundreds of years ago by the scientific community have now been proven to be false. The problem that exists is that where science proceeds forward in a greater pursuit of the truth, many religions oftentimes get stuck in dogmatic beliefs that can easily be proven false and by doing so, lose credibility. I believe the solution lies in the field of spirituality, which deals with that spirit and soul that lies behind the physical realm of existence. Spirituality is very much like science in that it is the pursuit of truth and always open to new evidence that can advance its premises. The field of spirituality doesn’t claim to know the absolute truth and sees much of our existence as a mystery, yet to be solved. Spirituality, however, does firmly believe that there is an almighty power and omnipresent spirit in the universe, which is the source for all that is. This power and source not only sets in motion all the natural laws of the universe, but is the very essence of all life. From this life force and life source, we as human beings are provided spiritual attributes that are unlimited in potential. As human beings we are able to draw on our spiritual attributes of love, faith, inner strength, imagination, resilience, hope, wisdom, understanding, compassion, and more, to live the life we desire to live. The one almighty power and omnipresent spirit, which is the source for all that is, is commonly known as God and is undeniably evidenced by that which exists. Send e-mail to the Rev.
