FAITH Q&A: Choosing the right religion

By The Rev. Duke Tufty, Pastor — Unity Temple on the Kansas City Plaza

Q:
I did not grow up in any faith. So how does a person go about choosing a religion? How do you know which is the right one?

A: When it comes to the major religions of the world, their foundational principles are similar. The founder of each religion encouraged the people to be faithful to God, express love, live a peaceful existence and aspire to their highest potential of good. Each religion presents its message using language, images, rituals and customs that are conducive to its cultural roots. I think it's a good idea to try out several different religions until one is discovered that resonates with you and provides a continuing meaningful spiritual experience.

When deciding on a religion or a particular church within a religion, the following five points can be used as a guideline:

bulletThe church should empower you, not overpower you; its message should encourage you to think for yourself and discover your inner spiritual attributes.
bulletThe church should encourage you to turn inward and develop a personal relationship with God rather than designate a religious leader to be your liaison with God.
bulletThe church should awaken you to your divine goodness and inspire you to express your greater potential rather than insinuating you are sinful by nature and laden you with guilt and shame.
bulletThe religions should stimulate you intellectually, move you emotionally and inspire you intuitively.
bulletThe church should be open to your insights and be able to answer your questions.

Keep in mind no single person is closer to God than another. The spiritual truth is within you, and your journey through life is one in which your awareness of God can grow every day in every way with or without religion.
